How many times in life have you heard " do it as unto the Lord?" I have heard it for as long as I can remember. I always thought it meant that whatever we do, you it for God. Yet, I didn't fully understand what that meant either except to do it for the right reasons.

Beloved, I am here to tell you, if you are doing things with that mindset, you may need to consider you are incorrect in your thinking. Hear me out, before you count me out.

Let's take a look at the actual scripture. Remembering mankind is flawed and when quoting this scripture there is a very important word left out. "Heartily." This word is the direction and guidance as to how we are to accomplish this "as unto the Lord" thing. So, let's take a good look at the word.

Heartily in this scripture has two meanings, it is the only place in scripture where it is used in this double context. First, when we take a look at the root word of Heartily it leads us to these words exceedingly, abundantly, and above. Sound familiar?

Eph 3:20-21" Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly and above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us."

God is simply asking of us what He Himself is already doing for us. God heartily works for our good, should we not heartily work for His in return? Is that not part of our reasonable service?

Remember, I said this word has a double meaning. This is the one and only time, heartily will mean both of these things at the same time in all of scripture. In the Greek the word for Heartily is Psoo-khay meaning "breath." The breath of God, the Holy Spirit.

Whenever we do anything, we need to realize that we, beloved are the vessel for the breath of God; the Holy Spirit. It is His good words and deeds that are holy and righteous. We should not do anything He has not directed us to do. When we do things by our own power blessings will not flow. The scripture tells us "not to men."

Let us stop and consider our way, beloved. When we are doing good deeds, when we are loving our neighbors and praying for our enemies, when we are taking our communion.... The Word says, "whatever you do." It isn't specific to one or two things; it is all encompassing in everything you do we are to do it as unto the Lord, meaning by the Spirit of God whatever we do, we do it as if Jesus himself were doing it himself.

Don't misunderstand beloved, we do not make such claims as being the Messiah, we make claims that we are disciples of Jesus and signs and wonders shall follow when we heartily serve as unto the Lord. For It is only by His power and His might.

Vs. 21 "to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever."

Amen
